THE NEWBORN KING: OFFSPRING

A contemplative reading for Advent 2020.

He brought him outside and said, “Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.”

Abraham is promised to be the father of a great nation, a holy nation meant to bless all others. But it is a promise he does not see fulfilled in his lifetime. And when it is fulfilled many generations later, it is in ways quite unexpected.

READ & RECITE

Read the full story in Genesis 15

Read Genesis 15:5 a second time, but aloud and slowly, allowing each word to sink in.


OBSERVE

Take a few moments and pay special attention to the key passage and accompanying image.

  • Compose a list of words in response to the image. How does the image make you feel about the passage? (Ie. excited, sad, brave etc.)


CONNECT

Look up the related passages provided and read each one. Notice and write down the words, phrases or ideas that connect to today's image and key verse.


REFLECT

What new questions did this study bring up for you?

How does today’s reading resonate with your life? Your relationship with Jesus?
